Shanghai Media Group (SMG), a multi-media group operating radio, television, newspaper and Internet companies, is affiliated with the Shanghai Media & Entertainment Group (SMEG). SMG has total assets of 11.7 billion RMB and employs more than 5,200 professionals. The group was established in 2001 through the merger of The People's Radio Station of Shanghai, East Radio Shanghai, Shanghai Television Station, Oriental Television Station and Shanghai Cable Television Station.

SMG's major business activities are centered around television and related media and entertainment services, including performing arts, sports, technology services, content research and development, and investment. Its broadcast media encompass 11 analog TV channels, 34 digital cable pay TV services, a broadband Internet TV service, 10 analog radio services and 19 digital radio services. The group also runs newspapers, magazines, news web sites and audio-visual publishing houses. SMG also owns and manages five sports clubs and 14 performing arts companies.

In 2003, the group’s 11 TV channels achieved a market share of 76 percent (according to Nielsen), and the group’s commercial sales revenue accounted for 10 percent of the Chinese market. As a producer and publisher of news, movies, series, entertainment, sports, financial information, music and documentaries, SMG is marching rapidly ahead in both the domestic and the world TV market.

The group’s Entertainment Section is undergoing a comprehensive expansion. It is developing into new areas, including pay TV services, program copyright sales, brand-related businesses and new-media businesses. In the meantime, SMG is also trying to further develop itself through financing initiatives.
